THE GENETTA

(Viverra genetta)

The TPFECF Genetta Conservation Initiative is a species-focused research and conservation program developed by Twin Pine Farm & Exotics Conservation Foundation to advance the scientific understanding, captive management, and long-term conservation of the genus Genetta.

Despite their wide distribution across Africa and parts of Europe, genets remain among the least studied small carnivores in both zoological collections and the wild. Historically, many institutions have maintained genets under broad or inaccurate classifications-often labeled simply as “common genet” (Genetta genetta) without verified species or subspecies identification.

This initiative addresses a critical gap in zoological and conservation science: the lack of accurate taxonomic, genetic, and population-level understanding of genets in human care.

Phase I Objectives (Year One-five)

  • Identify and engage all known genet holders in North America

  • Collect:

    • Photographs

    • Morphometric data

    • Pedigree and locality information

    • DNA samples

  • Compare captive animals with museum and published references

  • Determine genetic integrity vs. hybridization
  • Establish a scientific advisory network of:

    • Zoological professionals

    • Geneticists

    • Museum researchers

    • Field biologists

Collaborative Network

TPFECF is actively building partnerships with:

  • Zoological institutions (including Nashville Zoo and others)

  • University genetics laboratories

  • Museum mammalogy collections

  • Field researchers and conservation organizations

Public engagement and awareness efforts may also involve conservation media and photography initiatives.

Long-Term Vision

The Genetta Conservation Initiative aims to position TPFECF as a leading North American center for genet research and management.

Key goals include:

  • Clarifying which genet species are present in captivity

  • Establishing scientifically managed breeding populations

  • Supporting field research for understudied species

  • Preventing the loss of rare genet taxa

  • Building an international collaborative network focused on Genetta conservation

Get Involved

We are actively seeking collaboration with:

  • Zoological institutions

  • Private holders with documented animals

  • Researchers and academic partners

  • Conservation organizations
